The yellow dope was dry; and the ‘dry run’ went all right. He’d explained to them that they’d be going in to France with four handling guys – ropes, not wires – and the trail-rope, and the new head-rope which might not be needed until the take-off for return. When they were there and landing in the Mormal forest he’d decide, in line with wind direction and strength and the topography as they found it, which lines should be anchored and at what angles; but here and now – ‘Well, at Jevington, edge of the woods there – look here now…’ He sketched it. ‘Trail-rope here. And two of the handling guys – here, and here. Head-rope—’ because he wanted to practise a take-off with it – ‘here.’ He asked McLachlan, ‘Stand the thought of doing two scrulexes, one right after the other?’

‘The thought appals me – but obviously I’ll have to.’

‘Sooner you than me, sir. But let’s say one handling guy each – on the side you disembark, right? But first you set up the trail-rope, Stavely, and you, sir, head-rope?’

He demonstrated the CHRG – Charlie Holt Releasing Gear – and explained how he hoped it would work in action. Stavely’s job, that – setting it up. Charlie didn’t want to lose the trail-rope, which might be essential to their safe landing back at Boubers – hence the CHRG – whereas the head-rope would have served its purpose and be released – by him, from his cockpit, the end simply cast off to run out through the D-ring on the ship’s forepart.
